SimTrans brings together the transportation sector, predominantly represented by railways, airlines and ship owners with experts in the human factors discipline. Human factors research is taking a constantly stronger position in determining optimal training, man-machine interaction (MMI) design, safety culture and attitudes, crew evaluation and selection etc. This is a reason for SimTrans to initially consider the bounds between the maritime, railways and the aviation industry formed by human factors.

Later it is the clear intention of the Society to expand its activities to other transport industries. The objective is to enhance safety quality and development, and to initiate interdisciplinary cooperation between relevant sectors.

The topics to be dealt with include, but are not limited to:

  • Quality and safety levels.
  • Safety culture and attitudes.
  • Human factors including human error.
  • Basic and advanced training.
  • Qualifications - requirements, tests and personnel selection.
  • Training methods, programmes and tools.
  • Standards, procedures and requirements within safety and training.

This will be achieved in several ways. Seminars, workshops and meetings are given a high priority. Information letters - like the SimTrans news and the web site - inform members about activities of the Society.

Interdisciplinary cooperation, coordination with similar foreign societies and coordination with relevant international congresses are other ways to deal with the topics mentioned above.
